Three family members infected with Dengue Type 2 in Kaohsiung's Gangshan District

Kaohsiung's Gangshan District reported three new local Dengue fever cases on August 27, all belonging to the same family and confirmed as Dengue Type 2. The cluster infection prompted an immediate response from health authorities.

Health officials investigated the family's residence and discovered three mosquito breeding sites, leading to a NT$6,000 fine. The index case is a 65-year-old local man who developed symptoms including high fever, muscle aches, and nausea on August 26. His condition did not improve, leading him to seek emergency care at the Kaohsiung Municipal Gangshan Hospital, where a rapid Dengue NS1 test came back positive. Further testing of two cohabiting family members also yielded positive results.

The index patient's primary activities were centered around his home and factory in Gangshan District, with no recent travel history outside Taiwan in the past month. His two family members experienced fever symptoms on August 22 and August 25, respectively, and were diagnosed during the expanded testing following the index case's confirmation. The investigation suggests the infection likely occurred at their Gangshan residence.

In response, the city government's epidemic prevention team has activated emergency protocols. This includes epidemiological investigations, sample collection, and spraying in the affected areas. A three-in-one prevention strategy involving source reduction, larviciding, and environmental cleanup is underway within a 400-meter radius of the case's residence. Kaohsiung has recorded a total of 10 local Dengue cases this year, highlighting the persistent risk of community transmission.
