Three Flemish Brabant Neighborhoods Vie for "Best Neighborhood 2026" Title

Krekelberg in Haacht, Den Tomme in Meerbeek, and Baaskouter in Asse have been nominated as contenders for Flanders Brabant's "Best Neighborhood 2026." These communities are distinguished by their exceptional social bonds and proactive engagement in fostering a supportive environment for residents.

In Krekelberg, a strong sense of community is evident, with residents organizing regular barbecues and social evenings in a shared open space known as the 'geleig.' This initiative began in 2013 when many new residents moved in, prompting neighbor Gaspard to organize gatherings to help everyone get acquainted. The neighborhood also boasts a "kids' club" run by young adults, who previously raised funds for events like Halloween parties by washing cars.

Den Tomme is noted for its diverse population, with residents from over 20 different nationalities. Despite the small house sizes and narrow streets, the community thrives on mutual care. This was highlighted when, following several recent deaths, neighbors opted to gift breakfast baskets instead of traditional wreaths, offering practical support to grieving families.

When there were a few deaths in a short time, the idea arose not to buy mourning wreaths, but to give each other breakfast baskets.

Baaskouter in Asse is also recognized for its community spirit. Residents actively participate in neighborhood life, with initiatives like turning their street into a play area weekly for children. The community emphasizes a shared approach to raising children, reflecting the saying, "it takes a village to raise a child."
