Three Flights Diverted to Puerto Rico After Miami Cargo Plane Accident

Three American Airlines flights bound for Miami were diverted to San Juan after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane ran off the runway at Miami International Airport, Aerostar Puerto Rico said.

The diverted flights were AA3465 from Dominica, expected in San Juan at 3:47 p.m. local time; AA2691 from Fort-de-France, Martinique, due at 4 p.m.; and AA4316 from Maracaibo, Venezuela, expected at 4:45 p.m. Aerostar said San Juan airport operations continued while Miami remained under a temporary suspension.

At this time, no general disruption to operations at San Juan airport has been reported.

The company said American Airlines’ next scheduled flight from San Juan to Miami was still due to depart at 4:30 p.m., although it could be affected if the situation continued. Aerostar advised passengers traveling to or from Miami to check their itineraries directly with their airlines.

If the situation at MIA continues, it could be affected.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Prime Air Flight 7598 left the runway at about 2 p.m. local time. The aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 that had departed from San Juan. It struck several vehicles and caught fire, with more than 60 Miami-Dade firefighters and rescue units responding. The number of injured people remained unknown.

Miami airport said the aircraft was immobilized at the northeastern end of the airport and that all runways and taxiways remained closed, suspending every takeoff and landing. Images shared on social media showed the aircraft near a roadway with a large plume of smoke behind it.
