Three Police Officers Dismissed Over Killing of UNIPORT Graduate

Three police officers have been dismissed over the killing of University of Port Harcourt graduate Anthony Obodo in Port Harcourt’s Ada George area. A fourth officer, Inspector Solomon Nworgu, has been declared a deserter after allegedly fleeing the scene.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju said the patrol team pursued Obodo’s vehicle after officers flagged it down near Agip Junction. Corporal Alfred Louis allegedly fired three shots because Obodo refused to stop. One bullet struck the driver.

Where allegations of misconduct or criminality are made against police personnel, we will not shield any officer found to have acted outside the law under my watch.

Obodo was taken to Palmer’s Hospital in Port Harcourt, where a doctor later confirmed his death. The three officers were arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department before facing an orderly room trial. Adepoju said the investigation established their culpability.

Police continued efforts to locate Nworgu, who allegedly absconded after the shooting. Adepoju said the Rivers command would not protect officers found to have acted outside the law, adding that the force placed importance on professionalism, accountability, human rights and the protection of lives and property.

During the pursuit, Corporal Alfred Louis, who is attached to the patrol team, opened fire at the vehicle and a bullet hit the driver, identified as Anthony A. Obodo, who sustained a gunshot injury.
