Three-quarters of Americans think Trump isn’t focusing on top US issues – poll

A significant majority of Americans, three-quarters according to a new CNN poll, believe President Donald Trump is not addressing the nation's most pressing problems. The survey also reveals that two-thirds of Americans think Trump places his own interests above those of the United States. These findings emerge less than 100 days before the midterm elections, where Trump's Republican party faces expectations of losing control of Congress.

Trump's overall approval rating has fallen to 34%, matching a previous low recorded after the January 6, 2021, events. Public sentiment is particularly negative regarding the ongoing conflict in Iran, with only 28% approving of Trump's actions and a mere 25% deeming the war worthwhile given the costs in lives and resources. Domestically, the rising cost of living is a major concern, with 74% of Americans reporting hardship due to increased gas prices, a notable jump from 63% in March. Furthermore, 71% now believe Trump has not done enough to lower the prices of everyday goods, compared to 58% a year ago.

Even policies that were once a strength for Trump, such as his hardline immigration stance, are now drawing criticism. Only 39% of respondents approve of his job performance on immigration, while 54% believe he has gone too far in deporting undocumented immigrants. The poll also highlights widespread disapproval of Trump's personal impact on the presidency, citing expenditures on the White House ballroom, the reflecting pool renovation, and proposed ceremonial arches, with only 17% holding positive views on these matters. Directly contrasting his perceived focus on national issues, 73% of Americans stated Trump is out of touch with their everyday problems. Additionally, only 38% consider him an effective world leader, and 57% question his stamina and mental sharpness for the presidency.
