Three-Quarters of German Outdoor Pools Need Repairs Amid Funding Crisis

Germany's beloved outdoor swimming pools are in a state of disrepair, with a significant increase in the number needing urgent attention. A survey by the Association of Municipal Companies reveals that 45 percent of these facilities require comprehensive renovation, a notable rise from previous years. An additional 31 percent need smaller repairs.

Operators are struggling to finance these essential upgrades. The survey highlights that 90 percent of respondents identify a lack of funding as the primary problem, with rising construction costs also posing a significant hurdle for 76 percent.

Ingbert Liebig, the association's chief executive, expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the pools, especially during the summer when millions of people seek to use them. He warned that failing to invest now jeopardizes the future of these vital public services. The association is calling for better funding conditions, emphasizing the importance of outdoor pools for swimming education and health.

The survey, conducted in April, included responses from 94 pool operators. Germany has over 2,800 outdoor swimming pools, and the findings underscore a growing challenge in maintaining these community assets.
