Three road cave-ins in Gurugram after heavy rain; vehicles trapped

Gurugram faced significant disruption on Tuesday as three separate road cave-ins occurred in the aftermath of heavy rainfall and waterlogging. The incidents underscore the vulnerability of the city's infrastructure to severe weather conditions.

One of the most prominent collapses happened on the service road at IFFCO Chowk. Preliminary investigations suggest that a main sewer line belonging to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), located beneath the affected road section, may be responsible for the structural failure. Traffic police quickly cordoned off the area and rerouted vehicles to alternative paths to ensure public safety.

Further incidents involved a cement-laden canter sinking into a section of the link road to Dwarka Expressway in Sector 9. Roadside excavation work was reportedly underway, and the waterlogging obscured the weakened road surface, leading to the vehicle becoming trapped. In another instance, a truck carrying sand became stuck near Narsinghpur village on the service road along the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway when a stormwater drain cover broke under its weight.

While no injuries were reported, the cave-ins caused damage to the vehicles involved and highlighted concerns about the city's drainage and road maintenance systems. The GMDA has stated that repair work on the 1000mm master sewer line will precede road repairs at the IFFCO Chowk site.
