Thuringia's unemployment rises in August, driven by youth and weak economy

Unemployment in the German state of Thuringia climbed in August, with the number of jobless individuals reaching 71,788. This marks a 0.9% increase from July and a 1.4% rise compared to the previous year. The unemployment rate now stands at 6.6%, a slight uptick from the previous month.

The figures highlight a concerning trend among younger demographics. Approximately 11,400 individuals under 25 were unemployed in August, an increase of 1,100 from July and 890 from a year prior. The situation is even more acute for those under 20, whose unemployment numbers surged by nearly a fifth within a single month.

Markus Behrens, head of the Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency, attributed the August increase primarily to institutional and seasonal factors, noting that higher youth unemployment is typical for this time of year. However, he also pointed to a broader economic slowdown, as unemployment rose by 900 people even after accounting for seasonal fluctuations.

Despite the challenging economic climate, Behrens stated that Thuringia's labor market is holding up relatively well. He emphasized the growing contribution of foreign nationals to labor market stability, compensating for demographic decline and securing the workforce. Behrens stressed that "increased labor migration is therefore unavoidable to secure the labor market in the long term."

In August, around 4,300 people found new employment, a slight decrease from July. Preliminary data from June indicates that approximately 774,800 people were in socially insured employment in the state, a decrease of 8,300 compared to the previous year.
