Tianmu's Frangipani Trees Bloom, Adorning Summer Streets with Floral Beauty

Taipei's Tianmu district is currently adorned with the vibrant blooms of frangipani trees at the Lanxing No. 1 Green Space. Ten frangipani trees are showcasing their peak flowering season, painting the urban landscape with a gentle and tranquil summer vista. Among them, two trees bear yellow-white blossoms, likened to the fresh brightness of dawn, while eight others display red flowers, evoking the passionate brilliance of sunset.

These fragrant flowers, carried by the summer breeze, have become a popular attraction, drawing many visitors to pause, admire, and capture photographs. The tranquil atmosphere offers a rare moment of peace amidst the bustling city. Unlike the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms or the bold display of roses, frangipani trees offer a serene and unhurried elegance, inviting passersby to slow down and appreciate the harmonious blend of nature and urban life.

The Lanxing No. 1 Green Space, located at the intersection of Zhongshan North Road Section 6 and Shidong Road, spans 4,263 square meters. Established in 1989, it has served as a vital green space for the Tianmu community, providing a place for walking, exercising, recreation, and social gatherings. The park features lush vegetation, fitness equipment, a children's play area, a semi-circular plaza, and an arched bridge, creating a layered scenic experience enhanced by the shade of the trees.

Frangipani, also known as Plumeria, is a small tree typically reaching 3 to 5 meters in height, characterized by its grayish-white bark and sturdy branches that form a distinctive silhouette. Its leaves cluster at the branch tips, offering a clear view of the branch lines from below, with visible leaf scars marking where leaves once grew. The leaves exhibit neatly arranged parallel pinnate veins that connect at the margins, forming a unique structure known as a 'connected vein' in botanical terms.

During the summer and autumn flowering seasons, the trees produce cymose inflorescences at the tips of their branches. Each flower boasts five petals that unfurl gracefully, resembling a pinwheel. The most common variety features white petals with a yellow center, earning it the affectionate name 'egg flower' due to its resemblance to a freshly boiled egg. Beyond this popular type, hybrid varieties with red or multi-colored flowers also contribute to the diverse floral beauty displayed in the park. The interplay of yellow-white and red blossoms against the backdrop of lush green foliage creates a striking visual contrast, enhancing the serene ambiance whether one is strolling along the shaded paths, resting on the plaza, or crossing the arched bridge.
