Tigray rebels report clashes with Ethiopian government troops

Fighting has erupted between Tigray rebels and Ethiopian government forces, marking a resurgence of the bloody conflict after more than three and a half years of relative calm. The clashes are reportedly concentrated in the western part of the Tigray region.

Amanuel Assefa, deputy chairman of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), announced that government troops initiated an assault early Saturday morning in Shererina, a town in northern Ethiopia near the border with Sudan. Assefa confirmed that the fighting is ongoing.

This outbreak of violence signals a potential escalation of the long-standing tensions in the region. Eritrea, which was involved in the previous conflict, is also reported to be re-engaging in the hostilities. The renewed fighting raises concerns about stability and humanitarian conditions in Ethiopia.
