Nationalist riots broke out in Southampton this week after anti-immigration activist Tommy Robinson and others urged protesters to assemble. They alleged that anti-white prejudice and "two-tier policing" played a role in the case, claims rejected by the police and the UK government. Robinson, also known as Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, stated that the Nowak case proved "whites are now treated differently" and warned that "s**t is going to explode."

The UK government, however, accuses Robinson and figures like Reform UK's Nigel Farage of deliberately stoking division within Britain over the case. These tensions were foreshadowed weeks before the trial of Nowak's murderer, indicating the case's potential to ignite trouble.

Nowak, an 18-year-old university student, was stabbed in December 2025. He encountered Vickrum Digwa, a Sikh man openly carrying a ceremonial blade, and filmed him, asking if he was a "badman." Digwa then snatched Nowak's phone and fatally stabbed him. Digwa's brother initially reported the incident to the police as a racist attack by Nowak, a claim Digwa repeated. Police arrested Nowak, who was dying, but later arrested Digwa upon realizing the student was the victim. Digwa's assertions were dismissed as "lies" during the court case, where harrowing footage of Nowak's arrest was presented.
