Tinubu calls for peaceful, transparent Osun election

President Bola Tinubu has called for a peaceful and transparent governorship election in Osun State, scheduled for August 15, 2026. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure an orderly and fair process, stating it should be a test case for the commission's readiness for the 2027 general elections.

I urge INEC to ensure the integrity of the process. INEC must use this last off-cycle election as a test case to demonstrate to Nigerians their full preparedness for the 2027 polls.

Tinubu also directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security heads to provide maximum security, warning against any disruptions. He stressed the importance of protecting electoral officials and voters, ensuring they can perform their duties without fear or intimidation. The president assured citizens that all necessary measures are in place for a secure voting environment.

I have charged the Inspector-General of Police and other heads of security outfits taking part in the election to provide maximum security at polling units. No room should be allowed for troublemakers to disrupt the process.

"Voters should feel confident to go out in their numbers to vote for the candidate of their choice as all measures necessary to ensure a peaceful, free and fair election have been put in place," Tinubu declared. He added, "Our elections must be credible, and the outcome of the Osun Governorship election must reflect the will of the people."

Electoral officials and voters must be protected so they can perform their civic duties without fear or intimidation.

The election features 15 candidates, including the incumbent governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress candidate Munirudeen Oyebamiji. The President's message also comes amid calls from Amnesty International for adequate security during the Osun election.
