Tinubu Orders National Security Threats Assessment and Five-Year Defense Plan

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate preparation of a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a rolling five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan. This initiative aims to strengthen coordination across Nigeria's defense, intelligence, and security capabilities.

Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, the President's Special Adviser on Homeland Security, will lead a nine-man committee tasked with drafting the strategic defense operations plan. The committee includes key figures such as the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Ministers of Defence and State for Defence, alongside the Chiefs of Defence Staff, Army, Air Force, and Naval Staff. The Directors-General of the Department of State Service and the National Intelligence Agency are also members.

The operation demonstrated what can be achieved when our agencies work together with a clear objective and the necessary intelligence.

President Tinubu emphasized the need for a coherent framework to address evolving security threats nationwide, stating that the new plan would provide a common understanding of threats, operational objectives, and required capabilities. He cited recent security successes, like the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, as examples of what can be achieved through improved coordination.

The President noted that current operational requirements are often considered in isolation, hindering efficient resource deployment. The National Threat Assessment will identify principal threats and their urgency, while the Strategic Defence Operations Plan will translate this assessment into clear operational priorities, outlining necessary forces, capabilities, gaps, and an implementation timetable.
