TIPS Procedure Restored at Serbian Clinic, Patient Successfully Operated

After a hiatus of several years, the University Clinical Center of Serbia (UCCS) has successfully revived the Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) procedure. This highly specialized interventional radiology technique is crucial for managing complications arising from severe liver diseases.

The UCCS announced the successful completion of the procedure on a 65-year-old patient suffering from liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The TIPS intervention effectively addressed a severe complication of the disease, leading to a positive outcome for the patient, who is reportedly in good condition.

The complex procedure was a collaborative effort, performed by Professor Gert Male, a Belgian specialist, alongside a team of doctors from the UCCS, including Associate Professor Dr. Aleksandar Filipović and assistants Dr. Miloš Zakošeka, Dr. Dušan Bulatović, and Dr. Aleksa Igić.

With the reintroduction of the TIPS procedure, Serbia and the UCCS are once again positioned among the centers capable of performing this advanced intervention. While initial procedures will be supported by Professor Male, the UCCS anticipates that its domestic medical team will soon be able to conduct the TIPS procedure independently, enhancing the country's capacity for treating complex liver conditions.
