Tisza Party Nominee for New State Police Chief Has Dual Citizenship

A new political police force has been established in Hungary with the creation of the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office, according to Fidesz.

Fidesz had previously submitted two amendment proposals to the legislation establishing the office. One aimed to classify the asset protection procedure as an administrative procedure, subject to review by administrative courts. The second proposal sought to place the office's investigative actions under the supervision of a judge, similar to the oversight typically exercised in criminal proceedings.

However, the Tisza Party voted against both of these proposals. Fidesz faction leader János Bóka questioned the Tisza Party's stance, asking why they would fear judicial oversight of the asset recovery office's activities. The rejection of Fidesz's amendments means the office's operations will largely escape judicial scrutiny.
