TMC leader, two associates arrested over murder of Bengal Congress leader and son

A Trinamool Congress panchayat leader, Fatima Bibi, and two associates were arrested Sunday in West Bengal's Nadia district. Police suspect them in the murder of local Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his son, Abu Sufian, who were shot dead in their car Saturday evening. The victims were traveling from Bethuadahari to their home in Nakashipara when unidentified assailants riddled their vehicle with bullets.

According to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Bibi's husband, Jabbar Sheikh, who is currently jailed for a criminal case, allegedly ordered the hit from prison. "Jabbar Sheikh got this done while sitting in jail. His wife, the TMC pradhan, has been arrested," Adhikari stated.

The Congress party organized demonstrations across Kolkata and other districts on Sunday. State Congress president Subhankar Sarkar criticized the police, stating, "The murders took place because the police has no intelligence network on the ground. Kunal Ghosh, a leader from the Mamata Banerjee faction of the TMC, condemned the killings. However, he also cast aspersions on a rival faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee, saying, "We condemn the killings. A TMC leader is said to be involved. Let us see if this person belongs to the so-called good TMC. In that case we won’t be blamed for the crime."
