Toaster Test: Models for warm toast and crispy bread

Toasters are a staple in many kitchens, promising the simple pleasure of warm, crispy toast. A recent test by Der Spiegel evaluated several models, assessing their ability to deliver on this promise, particularly with different types of bread and varying browning preferences.

The tested toasters generally share core functionalities. These include essential safety features like overheating protection and a stop button for immediate cancellation. Convenience is enhanced by features such as pull-out crumb trays (with one exception), defrost and reheat functions, and automatic bread centering, which is crucial for achieving evenly toasted surfaces. Most models also feature rubber feet for stability, preventing accidental tipping.

Beyond standard toast, the tested devices theoretically can handle various baked goods, from bread rolls and pita to bagels and burger buns. Some models even offer one-sided toasting, ideal for bagels or buns where only the cut side needs to be heated. The test specifically focused on how well the toasters handled three popular bread types: fresh and frozen butter toast, and larger sandwich slices (11x11 cm), using a medium toasting setting.

The Braun PurShine, the smallest and most affordable model tested, performed adequately for its price point. It produced evenly browned smaller slices but struggled with larger sandwich slices, leaving a significant margin untoasted. Its medium setting yielded lighter results than competitors, requiring users who prefer darker toast to increase the setting. The exterior of the Braun PurShine reached a high temperature of 105°C, despite the heating elements being at a moderate 350°C, necessitating caution during use. The integrated warming rack reached a sufficient 130°C.
