Tokyo Core Inflation Accelerates to 1.8% in August, Nearing Bank of Japan Target

Tokyo's core consumer prices accelerated in August, reaching an 1.8% year-on-year increase, according to data released Friday. This rise brings the Japanese capital closer to the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) 2% inflation target, indicating a broadening of price pressures. The increase surpassed median market forecasts, which had predicted a 1.7% gain, and follows a 1.7% rise in July.

Further underscoring the trend, an index closely watched by the BOJ that excludes volatile fresh food and fuel costs climbed to 2.0% in August. This measure, considered a more reliable indicator of underlying inflation, had previously stood at 1.8% in July. The data from Tokyo is viewed as a significant leading indicator for national price trends.

These figures will be crucial factors for the BOJ as it prepares for its next policy meeting on September 17-18. Following a rate hike in June to a 31-year high of 1%, the central bank maintained its monetary policy in July but issued its strongest warnings to date regarding escalating inflation risks. Analysts note that a recent surge in wholesale inflation, which hit 7.2% in July, highlights the growing price pressures stemming from the Middle East conflict, which are expected to impact consumer prices with a delay.

Sources indicate that the BOJ is considering raising interest rates as early as September and may adopt a more aggressive hiking pace thereafter, moving beyond the current rhythm of approximately two rate increases per year. This potential shift signals a move towards further monetary policy normalization.
