Tokyo Government's AI Dating App Spurs 265 Marriages Amid Low Birth Rate Crisis

An innovative AI-powered dating app launched by the Tokyo metropolitan government has successfully fostered 265 marriages since its inception in 2024. Named TOKYO Enmusubi, the platform was created in response to Japan's persistently low birth rate and a survey indicating that a significant portion of marriage-minded individuals were not actively seeking partners.

To ensure a serious user base, the app implements a rigorous screening process. Applicants must prove they are legally single and pass an online interview, filtering out casual users and focusing on those genuinely interested in marriage. As of June 30 this year, the app had 16,000 registered members, selected from approximately 36,000 applicants, and had facilitated 760 serious relationships.

One user, identified pseudonymously as "Turtle," shared her experience, describing the app as a "last chance" as she approached her 40s. She met her husband through the app and entered a serious relationship within weeks, leading to an engagement by year's end. Another user, "Skytree," praised the AI's compatibility assessments, noting that a high rating provided the encouragement needed to pursue a relationship. The app's success is a notable effort to address the demographic challenges facing Japan, where births have hit record lows while deaths significantly outnumber them.
