Toll Road Debtors Face Fines and Operations in Panama

Panama's National Highway Company (ENA), in collaboration with the Transit and Land Transport Authority (ATTT) and the National Police, launched a surprise operation on the Corredor Sur to catch drivers with overdue toll payments. This marks the eleventh such operation aimed at identifying users with negative Panapass balances and encouraging debt settlement.

According to ENA Operations Supervisor Lenín Flores, drivers using the corridors with a negative balance over $10 automatically receive a $10 fotomulta (photo ticket) each time they pass a toll booth. During the operation, ATTT officials, including an enforcement judge and personnel from licensing and minor infractions departments, were present to assist drivers in resolving their situations on-site.

The operation uncovered a range of outstanding debts, with some drivers owing $40, $100, $200, and even $450. Notably, one driver's debt surpassed $1,000. The authorities also reported at least three instances of drivers attempting to evade the checkpoint, leading to pursuits by ATTT motorcycle units.

Authorities reiterated that entering the corridors without Panapass, driving without a license plate, or maintaining a negative balance are violations of traffic regulations. They urged users to keep their accounts current to avoid financial penalties and administrative actions.
