Toluca beat Monterrey 2-0 to win the Leagues Cup

Toluca claimed the Leagues Cup with a 2-0 victory over Monterrey on Sunday, taking the title in the tournament that brings together teams from Mexico and Major League Soccer in the United States.

Alexis Vega opened the scoring in the fourth minute. After Federico Viñas struck the post, Vega recovered the rebound and sent the ball into the top corner. Toluca controlled possession afterward, although Monterrey created the better attacking chances before halftime.

The clearest opportunity came in the 42nd minute, when Hugo Cuypers reached the area. Monterrey began the second half with a higher defensive line and came close to equalizing in the 59th minute, but Cuypers’ header missed by a few centimeters.

Toluca doubled its lead in the 70th minute when Helinho turned in a pass from Viñas. Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada then made another error two minutes later, leaving Jorge Díaz with a clear shot that struck the post.

The victory reinforced Toluca’s standing as Mexico’s strongest team over the past two years, according to the report. Earlier, León defeated América 1-0 in the third-place match, with Colombian striker Díber Cambindo scoring from a pass by compatriot Daniel Arcila.
