Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway to star in Days of Thunder sequel 38 years after original

Tom Cruise will get back behind the wheel as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, 38 years after Days of Thunder first reached cinemas. Anne Hathaway will join him in the sequel as an engineer and owner of a racing team.

The actors announced the project in a smiling video posted on social media on August 29. Hathaway, who is pregnant with her third child, made clear that production would come afterward: “I’m going to have this baby first, then we’ll make this movie.”

Paramount has already scheduled the film for release on June 2, 2028. The sequel will be shot in IMAX and shown in cinemas, although the main details of the plot remain secret.

Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the 1990 film, will return as producer alongside Cruise. Will Staples will write the screenplay, and Jonathan Levine will direct. Tony Scott directed the original, which also starred Nicole Kidman and Robert Duvall.

Hathaway is currently the only other announced cast member. Before returning to the racing role, Cruise is set to appear in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Digger, while Hathaway is scheduled for Verity, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel.
