Tomás Etcheverry is one of two Argentine hopes keeping fans dreaming at the US Open. Alongside Francisco Cerúndolo, he helped put two Argentine flags in the men's singles round of 16 for the first time since 2017.

The player from La Plata will try to go a step further in New York on Sunday, when he meets home favorite Alex Michelsen for a place among the tournament's final eight. Their match on the Grandstand court at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows is scheduled to begin no earlier than 3:30 p.m. ESPN 2 and Disney+ will broadcast it.

Etcheverry, ranked 32nd in the ATP rankings, reached this stage by defeating Vit Kopriva, ranked 69th, in the first round, Jacob Fearnley, ranked 101st, in the second, and fellow Argentine Mariano Navone, ranked 49th, in the third. A win would take him to his first US Open quarterfinal. He has already reached that stage at a Grand Slam, at the 2023 French Open.

Michelsen, 22, is currently ranked 46th. The American defeated compatriot Brandon Nakashima, the 16th seed, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, before eliminating Spain's Daniel Mérida, ranked 39th, 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-3. The story remains developing as Etcheverry seeks another deep run in New York.
