Tomorrowland Enlists Divers to Clear Ponds for Festival

The organization of the Tomorrowland festival enlisted the help of Aronnax, a diving school based in Heist-op-den-Berg, to clear weeds from the ponds at the De Schorre festival grounds. The excessive growth of weeds, exacerbated by warm weather, had prevented the installation of the planned water lily fountains and caused issues with boat propellers.

Bruno Goyvaerts of Aronnax described the task as more challenging than anticipated. Nine divers worked for five hours, filling five large containers with weeds and debris. While they could mostly stand in the shallow water, they sank into the mud. "Honestly, there wasn't much diving involved," Goyvaerts noted. "In most places, we could stand, although we sank into the mud."

Beyond removing the water plants, the divers also conducted an ecological cleanup, collecting discarded items such as cans, cups, wood fragments, insulation pieces, and broken decorations. The festival organizers expressed gratitude for this additional effort and invited the divers back for a second session, hinting at the possibility of complimentary tickets.

The divers were also given an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the festival's stages, including the main stage, which is redesigned annually. Goyvaerts was highly impressed by the elaborate stage designs and construction, stating, "It's incredibly beautiful, but we had to promise not to take photos and not to reveal what we saw." He added, "I've seen many festivals in my life, but in terms of sets and construction, this surpasses everything. I understand why people want to come from all over the world. We Belgians should be proud of it!"
