Top Gear to return to screens after four-year hiatus

The acclaimed automotive series "Top Gear" is gearing up for its return to television, marking an end to a nearly four-year pause. BBC's entertainment director, Ed Havard, announced the comeback at the Edinburgh TV Festival, as reported by The Guardian.

The show has been off the air since December 2022, when one of its presenters, former cricketer Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff, sustained severe injuries during filming. "There has been a lot of speculation about it, and we can confirm that 'Top Gear' is returning," Havard stated, according to the British newspaper. However, he remained tight-lipped about the exact return date and the identities of the new hosts.

When asked about persistent rumors linking comedian Jimmy Carr to a hosting role, Havard commented, "Jimmy would be an excellent host, but I will not discuss it today." The original iteration of "Top Gear" focused on car journalism from 1977 to 2001. A relaunch in 2002, fronted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, transformed it into a global phenomenon, attracting hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide.

Under the new trio, the show shifted focus from standard car reviews to elaborate challenges and adventurous global trips. The original presenting team departed in 2015 after Clarkson's contract was not renewed following an altercation with a producer. Hammond and May followed him to Amazon Prime Video for their new show, "The Grand Tour," which concluded its run with the original hosts in 2024. The BBC's subsequent attempts to revive "Top Gear" with various presenters, including actor Matt LeBlanc and racing driver Chris Harris, did not recapture the original's success. The show's most recent hosts were Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Andrew Flintoff.
