Tornado Damages Historic Sites in Cremona, Italy; Mountain Cable Car Evacuated Due to Storm

Cremona, Italy, was struck by a tornado accompanied by hail and strong winds on Friday afternoon, causing significant damage to historic landmarks. The city's Duomo (Cathedral) and Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) sustained damage, with the spire's covering collapsing and the roof of the civic tower, the only remaining part of the original 1206 municipal building, being destroyed.

In a separate weather-related incident, the Sass Pordoi cable car near Canazei in Trentino was closed around 2:00 PM due to an ongoing weather alert. Approximately 200 people were at the upper station when the closure occurred. The local emergency services activated the Alpine and Speleological Rescue of Trentino to assist in evacuating the individuals.

During the evacuation, about 100 people were guided down by rescuers. One man in his sixties suffered sudden leg weakness and was carried down on a stretcher. Some passengers attempted to descend independently on foot along the trails, but the strong winds prevented helicopter intervention.

Several individuals sustained injuries during the evacuation process. One person suffered a lower limb injury after slipping on a trail, while another sustained a head injury from a fall. Emergency calls were reportedly triggered automatically by Apple Watch devices for some users. Mountain rescue teams worked to bring all stranded individuals safely to the base.
