Tough US Open draw for Gabi Ruse; Sorana Cîrstea has a smoother path

Romanian tennis players Gabriela Ruse and Sorana Cîrstea have learned their opponents for the first round of the US Open singles tournament in New York.

Gabriela Ruse, currently ranked 63rd in the WTA, faces a formidable challenge in her opening match against American Jessica Pegula, the world number 3 and third seed. The winner of this match will proceed to face either Venus Williams or Sofia Kenin in the next round. According to the WTA website, Ruse and Pegula have never competed against each other on the WTA tour.

In contrast, Sorana Cîrstea, ranked 17th in the WTA and seeded 16th, has a more manageable first-round encounter against Julia Grabher of Austria, who is ranked 114th. Should Cîrstea advance, she could then play against the winner of the match between Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland and Diane Parry of France. Cîrstea and Grabher have met twice before, with the Romanian winning both encounters in 2020 and 2022.

Notably, both Cîrstea and Ruse are positioned in the same half of the US Open singles draw. On the men's side, top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany will play Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, while second seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain faces Roman Safiullin of Russia, and fourth seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia will compete against Mariano Navone of Argentina.
