Tour of Spain: As the boss, Pogacar takes (already) the Red Jersey

Tadej Pogacar has made a strong statement at the start of the Tour of Spain, claiming victory on the opening stage and seizing the red jersey. The Slovenian rider, fresh off his Tour de France win, navigated the 9.4 km individual time trial in Monaco with precision, finishing a mere 9 centiseconds ahead of Great Britain's Ethan Hayter. Joshua Tarling of Wales secured third place, 4 seconds behind Pogacar. This win is particularly significant for the 27-year-old Pogacar, as it marks his first time wearing the leader's jersey in the Vuelta a España, a Grand Tour that remains the only one missing from his impressive palmarès. He is widely considered the favorite for the overall win. The stage also held personal significance for Joshua Tarling, who competed just eight days after the death of his brother, Finlay, during the Tour of Portugal. Among the French riders, Christophe Laporte finished fifth, while Léo Bisiaux came in sixth. For the general classification contenders, Pogacar's teammate Joao Almeida performed well, losing only 18 seconds, while Félix Gall of Austria finished 91st, 46 seconds off the pace. Primoz Roglic, a four-time winner of the race, showed resilience by finishing 22 seconds behind Pogacar, overcoming a preparation heavily disrupted by a crash.
