Tourist describes fleeing flames: 'Like something out of a movie'

Tourists vacationing in France have shared harrowing accounts of escaping wildfires that are currently raging across several parts of the country. Many described emergency alerts in the middle of the night, driving through intense flames, and rushing to beaches with their luggage in a desperate bid to flee.

Zac Morrison, a 21-year-old from London, was on holiday with ten family members on the Cap Ferret peninsula, southwest of Bordeaux. He recounted waking up to two SMS evacuation alerts at 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., ordering immediate departure. "We had French police going door to door. It was like something out of a movie – we had to take everything," Morrison told the BBC, emphasizing the chaotic and surreal nature of the evacuation.

As of Saturday afternoon, the French government reported that 197,000 individuals had been evacuated from their homes in southwestern France due to the ongoing wildfires. The scale of the devastation is immense, with nearly 1,000 square kilometers (98,000 hectares) having burned down by Saturday. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that this represents the largest area ever consumed by fires in the country's history, according to AFP.

The situation remains critical as emergency services continue to battle the blazes and manage the large-scale evacuations. The affected regions are grappling with significant environmental damage and the displacement of thousands of residents and tourists.
