A survey by the Finnish portal Iltalehti has revealed that popular tourist destinations can leave travelers deeply disappointed, with readers sharing experiences of aggressive sales tactics, cleanliness issues, and a pervasive sense of being pressured to spend more.

The survey, which asked readers to name the countries that most disappointed them, highlighted a stark contrast between the idealized vacation experience and the reality faced by some visitors. While many destinations attract millions annually, some Finns left with a "bitter taste," citing issues ranging from constant upselling to a lack of personal security. Notably, alongside criticisms, many respondents also offered glowing reviews of the same locations, underscoring the highly subjective nature of travel satisfaction.

Turkey emerged as a focal point for divided opinions. Negative experiences often centered on intense interactions with vendors and service staff in tourist zones. One reader described feeling pressured by persistent street vendors and restaurant staff, even recounting an unsettling experience where "someone offered sex at every turn." Such aggressive approaches can overshadow the positive aspects of a trip, with aggressive vendors identified in tourism studies as a key factor negatively impacting the overall vacation experience.

However, many other travelers reported positive stays in Turkey, particularly in resorts like Alanya and Bodrum. These individuals praised the quality of hotels, the helpfulness of staff, affordable prices, and a general sense of security. They expressed a willingness to return, despite the challenges that tourism there can present. Bulgaria also featured, with one mother recounting a nightmarish experience of being assigned a windowless room upon arrival with her two-year-old child.
