TOWARDS SELF-RELIANCE IN DEFENCE PRODUCTION

Nigeria is taking a significant step towards defense self-reliance with the establishment of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Institute of Technology. Inaugurated in Kaduna by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, the institute is a key component of President Bola Tinubu's national security strategy. Its primary goal is to reduce Nigeria's dependence on foreign countries for critical defense capabilities and technical expertise. For decades, Nigeria has relied heavily on external sources for military hardware, training, and technological assistance, impacting its sovereignty and straining its foreign exchange reserves. The new institute aims to address this by providing the necessary technical knowledge for the design, development, and maintenance of defense platforms and systems. This initiative is seen as a paradigm shift for the nation's indigenous defense industrial base, focusing on capacity building and professional counterterrorism training. In modern warfare, the minister emphasized, strategic thinking, intelligence innovation, and skilled personnel are as crucial as physical defense infrastructure. The DICON Institute of Technology is designed to produce not only defense equipment but also the highly trained manpower required to operate and innovate within the defense sector. This move aligns with President Tinubu's commitment to tackling insecurity and fostering a more self-sufficient defense industry within Nigeria.
