Trade dispute with US: Canada puts retaliatory tariffs into force as Trump threatens Bombardier

Canada has put retaliatory tariffs on US goods into force, with duties ranging from 15% to 50% on products worth a total of $20 billion. The list includes steel and aluminum products, dairy goods, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Some seafood products were removed from the original list.

The move follows the collapse of trade talks between the two countries. The United States imposed 50% tariffs in August on Canadian goods worth about $20 billion, including hockey sticks, furniture, honey and wine. Canada then announced its countermeasures.

At the same time, Donald Trump has opened another front by targeting Bombardier, the Montreal-based aircraft manufacturer and US rival of Gulfstream. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "No more Bombardier sales in the United States! Their products are not good enough!" He said the company would have to manufacture in the United States if it wanted access to the American market, and accused it of treating America like a "piggy bank."

The White House did not initially explain how a sales ban could be implemented, and Bombardier had not issued a statement. Industry experts questioned whether such a measure could withstand legal challenges. Bombardier aircraft are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and fall under the USMCA trade agreement, which Trump helped negotiate during his first term.

Bombardier already has a substantial US presence. It employs 3,500 people there, works with 2,800 suppliers and operates factories and service centers. Its Global 8000 flagship aircraft has wings made in Texas, while its defense division is based in Kansas. About half of the 5,100 Bombardier aircraft in service worldwide are located in the United States.
