Trader checks uncover suspected extortion call center in Quito

An inter-institutional operation targeting public space control in northern Quito has led to the discovery of a suspected extortion call center. The finding occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, in the Iñaquito sector, near La Carolina Park, following an initial technical review of informal coconut vendors.

The operation was a coordinated effort between the National Police (Zone 9), the General Secretariat of Citizen Security and Risk Management, and the Metropolitan Control Agency (AMC). During routine inspections of irregular vendors, police officers checked identities and backgrounds. A review of the vendors' mobile devices revealed activities unrelated to selling coconuts, which led authorities to the property housing the alleged illicit network.

Upon entering the premises in Iñaquito, officials found over 30 individuals working in an office-like environment with cubicles. The site was equipped with laptop computers, mobile phones, SIM cards from various operators, and various technological devices used for mass communications. Seized computer systems contained Excel spreadsheets with personal databases and contact lists, which were used to communicate with alleged victims via mobile chat applications. These conversations included direct references to debt collection, outstanding payments, and demands for money.

All confiscated computer equipment, mobile devices, and documents have been placed under the custody of the competent authorities. They will be analyzed to determine the operations conducted, the origin of the equipment, and legal responsibilities. Further investigations are expected to reveal the full scope of the alleged extortion ring.
