Traffic accident injures six on Quito's Simón Bolívar Avenue; road closures reported

Six people were injured in a traffic accident on Quito's Simón Bolívar Avenue on Sunday morning, July 20, 2026. The collision involved two light vehicles in the El Troje sector, located in the southern part of the city.

The emergency response system, ECU 911, received the alert at 10:45 AM and coordinated the deployment of various emergency teams. The Quito Fire Department, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS), and the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) were dispatched to the scene to provide assistance and manage the situation.

Medical teams administered pre-hospital care to the injured individuals at the accident site before transporting them to nearby healthcare facilities for further evaluation. The Quito Fire Department confirmed the involvement of two light vehicles and the provision of pre-hospital care to the six affected individuals.

As a result of the accident and the ongoing emergency response, the Metropolitan Transit Agency reported temporary road closures on Simón Bolívar Avenue. Specifically, the lane in the central section heading south to north was affected, with closures reported in both directions. Authorities advised drivers to exercise caution and consider using alternative routes while the scene was being cleared.

Later, the AMT confirmed that traffic flow had been restored on the avenue after several hours. The incident prompted reminders from the AMT for drivers to proceed with caution and to report any emergencies to ECU 911.
