Traffic crash kills one person in northern Quito

A traffic crash killed one person and injured another early Sunday on Avenida Mariscal Sucre in San Carlos, northern Quito. The Quito Fire Department responded to the emergency and provided prehospital care to the surviving affected person.

Firefighters did not identify either person or give an update on the condition of the person who received treatment. They also did not specify what caused the crash or describe how it unfolded.

A photograph released by the department showed a vehicle lying on its side, with visible damage to several parts of its bodywork and emergency personnel at the scene. After the incident, firefighters urged drivers to proceed carefully and obey traffic laws.

The crash occurred as Quito recorded 2,228 traffic incidents, 1,367 injuries and 147 deaths between January and July 2026, according to Metropolitan Transit Agency indicators. The city averages one traffic incident every two hours and 21 minutes.

Weekends account for a significant share of the reported cases. Saturdays recorded 370 incidents, Sundays 362 and Fridays 361, for a combined 1,093 cases, or nearly 49% of the period’s total. Collisions were the most common type, with 819 cases. People aged 20 to 29 represented 33% of those killed, while motorcycle occupants accounted for 45%.
