Trentino Tackles Hiring Crisis with New Task Force Involving Universities and Unions

Trentino, Italy, is grappling with a significant hiring crisis, as over half of its businesses report difficulties in finding qualified personnel. Data from the Excelsior information system for 2025 reveals that 54.7% of planned hires in the province face recruitment challenges, a figure that places Trentino above the national average. This situation is not due to a scarcity of job seekers but rather a "misalignment" between the skills companies require and those possessed by the available workforce.

In response to this growing problem, the provincial government, under the guidance of Vice President Achille Spinelli, has established a permanent "task force." This new body will function as an observatory dedicated to analyzing employment needs, aiming to rebalance the situation by reshaping training programs to better meet the demands of local businesses. The initiative brings together key regional stakeholders, including the University of Trentino, trade unions, the Chamber of Commerce, Trentino Sviluppo, Confindustria, Ance, hotel and artisan associations, and Cooperazione.

He emphasized that businesses are struggling with labor shortages and the rapid evolution of required skills. By convening all key players, the task force intends to create a permanent observation system. Spinelli believes that collaborative efforts will enable the timely orientation of training offerings, overcome fragmentation, and enhance Trentino's attractiveness as a region.

The initiative is also part of a broader strategy focused on human capital, as outlined in the province's industrial plan. This plan acknowledges that factors beyond skills, such as housing and quality of life, are crucial for attracting and retaining talent. Additionally, the executive approved an agreement to integrate around forty workers from the "Progettone" program into administrative roles within public offices, aiming to support security personnel and improve public space management.
