Trial begins for man accused of hanging dog 'Buddy' in German forest

A trial commenced at the Flensburg District Court against a 38-year-old man accused of fatally hanging a small dog, referred to as "Buddy." The case has drawn significant public attention and concern in Flensburg and online.

Prosecutors allege that in late March of the previous year, the accused did not take the white poodle mix to a shelter or for euthanasia as discussed with his partner. Instead, he is accused of hanging the small male dog with a thin rope in a forest in Flensburg, causing it to suffer and die.

The man faces charges for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. According to the prosecution, the couple intended to move to an apartment where pets were not allowed, and the defendant reportedly disliked the dog. The trial, initially scheduled for one day, was extended due to the length of the evidence presentation and will continue on August 11th for closing arguments and the verdict.

During his testimony, the accused stated he did not kill the dog, claiming he intended to have it euthanized but met an acquaintance who then took the dog. He expressed regret for leaving the dog alone. However, his account was marked by several contradictions. The dog's owner, who testified as a witness, also provided statements that the judge considered inconsistent. The relationship status between the accused and the dog's owner was also a point of discussion, with the judge expressing doubt about their engagement, which could have established a right to refuse testimony.

The case generated considerable sympathy and distress, particularly on social media, where it also led to threats and hateful comments. The dog was quickly identified despite lacking a microchip, partly due to its distinctive leash. "Buddy" had previously been taken to a shelter after being found tied up in a forest by police about a year earlier. Following its death, donations were collected for a dignified burial, and his ashes were interred at the animal shelter in the autumn after a memorial service.
