Trinidad police launch investigation after newborn found abandoned in box

Police in Trinidad and Tobago have launched an investigation following the discovery of a newborn baby girl abandoned in a cardboard box along a roadside in South Oropouche. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.

A 23-year-old Spanish national, residing in St Mary’s Village, South Oropouche, was walking near the South Oropouche Government Primary School when she heard a baby crying. She found the infant inside a cardboard box, concealed within a black plastic bag and wrapped in a blanket. The umbilical cord was still attached.

The woman immediately took charge of the infant and brought the baby to the home of a 47-year-old man from the same village. Together, they transported the baby to the Oropouche Police Station around 12:30 pm. The infant was subsequently transferred to a medical institution for necessary assessment and treatment.

Authorities have since identified the infant's mother, and a formal investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment. The Children’s Authority has been notified and is providing assistance in the matter.
