Trinidadian javelin star LeBron James commits to Virginia Tech

Trinidad and Tobago's promising javelin talent, LeBron James, has announced his commitment to Virginia Tech, setting his sights on collegiate success and international competition. James, who shares a name with a global basketball icon, is poised to make his mark in track and field, with aspirations of contending for the men's javelin title at the 2027 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Oregon.

My main goal for 2027,” James told the Express, “is to continue developing at Virginia Tech and establish myself among the top javelin throwers in the NCAA. I want to compete for conference and national championships, continue improving my personal best, earn All-American honours, and help Virginia Tech succeed as a team.

His commitment follows a stellar performance at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 level, where he successfully defended his javelin championship. James set a new NJCAA record with a throw of 77.91 meters, a feat that also contributed to New Mexico Junior College securing the men's team title. This achievement marks a significant milestone, reflecting years of dedication and hard work.

Becoming a two-time national champion and breaking the NJCAA record are accomplishments that reflect years of hard work, sacrifice, and support from my coaches, teammates, family, and everyone who believed in me. Winning a national title once is special, but defending that title and setting the record makes it even more meaningful. It feels amazing and is something I’m very grateful for.

James expressed profound gratitude for the support from his coaches, teammates, and family, acknowledging the significance of defending his title and breaking the record. He views representing Trinidad and Tobago on such a platform as an honor and a motivation to continually improve. His personal best throw of 77.91m surpassed his previous mark of 75.04m, a testament to his consistent progress and effective training.

Looking ahead, James is focused on representing his country in upcoming championships, including the NACAC U23 Championships and the CAC Games.
