Truck carrying crane gets stuck under Jakarta overpass, driver allegedly on phone

A heavy-duty truck transporting a crane became lodged under a pedestrian overpass (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Tendean in South Jakarta early Tuesday, causing substantial damage to the structure. The incident occurred around 00:30 WIB when the truck, bearing license plate B-9077-UFU, attempted to pass beneath the overpass.

Jakarta's Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) suspects the driver was distracted by his mobile phone, failing to accurately gauge the height of the crane being transported. "The driver saw the JPO, but unknowingly the driver was focused on his cellphone," BPBD Jakarta stated. This alleged distraction led to the crane colliding with and becoming stuck in the overpass.

The impact caused severe damage, particularly to the supporting structure of the JPO, with one support pillar appearing close to collapse. The pedestrian access stairs on the overpass are now unusable. The truck remains stuck in its position, hindering traffic flow.

The incident has led to significant traffic congestion in the surrounding area, with police urging motorists to avoid the Jalan Kapten Tendean route. Authorities are currently working on the complex task of removing the truck and assessing the full extent of the damage to the overpass.
