Truck carrying Sheinbaum supporters crashes in Monterrey, injuring 21

Twenty-one people were injured Sunday when a personnel-transport truck carrying supporters of President Claudia Sheinbaum collided with an urban bus in central Monterrey. Three of those hurt were taken to hospital.

The crash occurred at about 12:35 p.m. at the intersection of Arteaga and Doctor Coss, according to Nuevo León Civil Protection. Emergency crews assessed all 21 injured people at the scene and said their injuries were not serious. Three patients were transferred to Hospital General de Zona No. 21 of the Mexican Social Security Institute for medical care.

The passengers had attended activities linked to Sheinbaum’s visit to Nuevo León and were returning to the Fernando Amilpa neighborhood in the municipality of Escobedo. Some passengers said the private transport vehicle was traveling north on Doctor Coss when it struck the urban bus.

The occupants also said the traffic lights at the intersection had malfunctioned and were operating on flashing signals. Authorities have not assigned responsibility. Nuevo León Civil Protection said the cause of the collision and any liability would be determined by the appropriate authorities.

Civil Protection units from Nuevo León, Monterrey and Escobedo responded alongside staff from the Emergency Medical Regulatory Center and Red Cross paramedics. Rescue crews also dealt with an oil spill on the road, spreading absorbent material to reduce risks for motorists.
