Truck Drives into San Juan Protected Area, Causing Damage That Could Last Over a Century

A physician from Mendoza, Argentina, has been identified as the driver of a truck that plowed through a protected natural area in San Juan, leaving behind damage that authorities estimate could take more than a century to mend. The incident occurred in the Pampa del Leoncito, a sensitive ecosystem that was in the process of recovering from a recent flood.

The vehicle penetrated approximately 1.5 kilometers into the protected zone, creating deep tracks up to 25 centimeters in depth. This occurred in an area specifically designated with restrictions on vehicular access. The truck eventually became immobilized within this restricted sector.

Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter. A formal complaint has been filed against the 46-year-old driver, who has been identified as a medical doctor from the neighboring province of Mendoza. The extent of the environmental damage is significant, with projections suggesting a recovery period exceeding 100 years.
