Trump Administration Bans Import of Foreign-Made Humanoid Robots Over Security Fears

The Trump administration has declared humanoid and quadrupedal robots a national security risk, prohibiting their importation into the United States. This move places advanced robotic devices, many of which are produced in China, on a list of restricted items alongside companies like Huawei and China Telecom.

The U.S. regulator, the FCC, has added these "advanced robotic devices" to its list of prohibited imports based on findings from a White House task force. The task force concluded that robots manufactured abroad could compromise the safety and security of American citizens. National security agencies are particularly concerned about potential vulnerabilities in the supply chain that could disrupt economic and national security, as well as cybersecurity risks that could threaten critical U.S. infrastructure.

While most humanoid robots are currently designed for industrial settings like factories and warehouses, the ban reflects a broader effort to bolster American industry. The administration seeks to encourage domestic production and mitigate risks associated with foreign-made technology. The ban applies to new models, with exemptions for robots authorized by the Department of Defense, which are deemed not to pose unacceptable risks. Foreign-made inverters, used to convert power for the electrical grid, were also added to the restricted list.
