Trump announces 100 percent tariff on generics from mid-2028

However, this grace period is set to expire in August 2028, when the 100% tariff will be implemented for one year. Following this initial period, the tariff rate is slated to increase further, reaching 200%.

President Trump articulated that the primary objective behind this tariff policy is to "bring generic production back to the USA." By making imported generics significantly more expensive, the administration hopes to create a more competitive environment for American pharmaceutical companies and encourage investment in domestic manufacturing facilities.
