Trump announces deal for 'complete disarmament' of Hamas in Gaza

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that an agreement has been reached for the "complete disarmament" of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza. The deal also stipulates a phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces as the disarmament process unfolds.

Trump detailed the plan on his social media platform, Truth Social, calling it a "historic" step toward peace and security. He explained that the agreement will be executed in carefully structured phases. As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and an International Stabilization Force will collaborate with a newly formed Palestinian police force to ensure Gaza's safety for residents and its neighbors.

He emphasized that this accord represents a "major milestone" in implementing his 20-point plan for Gaza. Under the plan, the enclave will eventually be governed by a "new Palestinian government" that will work closely with the "Board of Peace," chaired by Trump himself, to support the Palestinian people.

The agreement will be carried out in carefully structured phases. As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilisation Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbours.

The U.S. President expressed gratitude to Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their crucial mediation efforts, stating that their work, alongside his administration's team, facilitated this "historic breakthrough." Trump recalled the "violent raging war, humanitarian crisis and hostages kept in brutal captivity" from one year ago, contrasting it with the "historic progress" made, while acknowledging that significant work remains.

The truce framework was negotiated under Trump's 20-point Gaza plan, with the Board of Peace monitoring its implementation. Hamas leaders had been in Cairo for discussions with Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish representatives. An unnamed Hamas official had previously described the negotiations as "positive" and "making progress." Earlier in July, Hamas announced the dissolution of its governing body in Gaza after nearly two decades.
