Trump Appoints Ex-Cop Lance Schroyer to Lead Immigration Enforcement Agency

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the appointment of Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma police officer, to lead the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. Schroyer, who currently serves as an advisor to the Interior Minister, brings "decades of experience incarcerating the worst criminals," Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump described Schroyer as a "former Oklahoma police officer and former Marine." The new ICE director is expected to play a critical role in the administration's efforts to "target, arrest, and expel illegal immigrants," according to Interior Minister Markwayne Mullin, who expressed his satisfaction with the appointment on X.

Schroyer is set to succeed Todd Lyons, who was appointed interim head of ICE by Trump in March 2025. Lyons departed in May 2026, shortly after the dismissal of former Interior Minister Kristi Noem. The nomination of Lance Schroyer requires approval from the Senate.

However, ICE directors have been appointed on an interim basis since 2017, with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) lacking a Senate-approved director for 11 years. Minister Mullin urged the Senate to expedite the approval process for Schroyer. ICE is central to Trump's anti-immigration agenda, and its methods have faced criticism, particularly after two Americans were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis in January while resisting their presence in the city.
