Trump asks Senate to confirm interim Attorney General Todd Blanche

President Donald Trump has called on the U.S. Senate to confirm Todd Blanche as the permanent Attorney General. Blanche, who served as Trump's personal lawyer before joining the administration, has been acting Attorney General since April. He replaced Pam Bondi, who left the post.

Shortly after taking office, Blanche initiated charges against former FBI Director James Comey, a key target of the president. Comey is under investigation for posting a social media image with a message that could be interpreted as inciting violence against the president.

The Attorney General, also serving as Justice Minister, attempted to establish a fund of approximately $1.8 billion. The administration claimed this fund would address what it described as the politicization of justice against Trump supporters under the previous Democratic administration of Joe Biden. However, Democrats labeled it a "black box" intended to reward the president's allies, including those convicted for the January 6th Capitol attack.

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, a member of the Judiciary Committee, criticized the move, stating, "Donald Trump is running the worst corruption operation in the history of the U.S. presidency. Todd Blanche, apparently, has not realized it." The confirmation process for Blanche in the committee could be challenging, as the nomination reportedly lacks unanimous support from Republican senators.
