Trump backs FIFA chief Infantino for UN Secretary-General: report

U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly championing FIFA President Gianni Infantino for the role of United Nations Secretary-General, according to The Post newspaper. A source close to the U.S. president described Infantino as "respected by all in the world" and possessing a "special ability to unite people."

Infantino, 56, has reportedly strengthened ties with Trump, particularly during the recent World Cup. The FIFA president allegedly made efforts to gain Trump's favor, including presenting him with the first FIFA Peace Prize in December. Trump's administration had previously awarded the hosting of the 2026 World Cup to the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Currently, António Guterres leads the UN, and his successor will be chosen this year as his term concludes. Should Infantino pursue the position, he would require the endorsement of the 15-member Security Council, which includes five permanent members with veto power, followed by confirmation from the General Assembly. Another candidate in contention is Rafael Grossi, the current director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who has expressed intentions for significant reforms within the organization.
