Trump bans imports of numerous Canadian goods as trade dispute escalates

Washington has moved beyond tariffs in its trade dispute with Canada. The Trump administration says numerous Canadian goods will be barred from entering the United States from September 29.

The restrictions cover motorcycles and mopeds, some dairy products, and selected wines, beers, vodka and spirits. A senior US government official put the value of the affected goods in the low single-digit billions of dollars, according to the presidential decrees.

The announcement came on the day Canadian counter-tariffs on US imports took effect. Canada has previously said those measures target steel and aluminum, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, with a total value of $27.6 billion.

Hours earlier, Trump had ordered US agencies to remove Canadian-origin products from the General Services Administration’s Multiple Award Schedules. The program covers long-term contracts through which federal agencies buy goods and services. Trump said the contracts are worth more than $50 billion a year and tied the order to his demand that Canada give US companies, including dairy farmers, equivalent access to its market.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States suffers from a trade imbalance with Canada and has used the same argument in imposing tariffs on other countries. The latest steps follow the failure of recent US-Canadian trade talks.
