Trump, Burnham Discuss Trade, Oil, and Hormuz Strait

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that he held a "very good" conversation with the new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, discussing key issues including trade, military cooperation, North Sea oil, and the removal of mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump described the discussion on his social media platform, Truth Social, as highly productive and indicated that the two leaders would meet again soon.

Trump expressed strong support for Burnham, stating, "The Prime Minister has a tough job ahead, but he will handle it, and the U.S. will of course help him!" He emphasized the "excellent relationship" between Washington and London. According to Sky News, Burnham's call to Trump was the first conversation he had with a foreign leader after assuming the role of Prime Minister.

Burnham, the leader of the governing Labour Party, officially took office as Prime Minister on Friday and was appointed by King Charles III on Monday. Trump had previously commented on Burnham in June, calling him "extremely liberal." However, over the weekend, Trump praised Burnham's plan to expedite the exploration of oil and gas reserves in licensed North Sea areas.

Burnham has previously been critical of Trump, particularly following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. During his campaign in June, Burnham characterized American politics as "polarized" and "toxic." Despite past criticisms, the recent conversation suggests a pragmatic approach to bilateral relations, focusing on areas of mutual interest such as energy security and economic development.
